You don't experience life. You experience the things you focus on.

Think about that for a moment.

Two people can live through the exact same experience and walk away with two completely different perspectives. One sees everything that went wrong. The other sees everything they learned, everything that went right, and every opportunity to grow.

Same experience. Different focus. Different life.

Whatever you consistently focus on becomes your experience of reality.

Focus on problems, and your life becomes a collection of problems.

Focus on excuses, and you'll always find reasons you can't succeed.

Focus on what you lack, and nothing you have will ever feel like enough.

But focus on opportunities, and you'll begin seeing possibilities where others see obstacles.

Focus on gratitude, and you'll discover how much you already have.

Focus on solutions, and you'll begin taking the actions necessary to change your circumstances.

This doesn't mean ignoring what's wrong. You cannot fix a problem you refuse to acknowledge. The difference is whether you spend your energy dwelling on the problem or working toward the solution.

Positive thinking isn't pretending everything is wonderful. It's recognizing that even when things go wrong, you still have the power to decide what those experiences mean and what you're going to do about them.

Your focus influences your thoughts. Your thoughts influence your emotions. Your emotions influence your decisions. And your decisions influence your actions.

And your actions determine the direction your life takes.

You cannot control everything that happens in your life. But you can learn to control where you direct your attention and how you respond.

Here's a simple exercise that can change the way you experience every day.

Tomorrow morning, before you get caught up in everything you have to do, take five minutes and ask yourself three questions:

  1. What are three things in my life that I'm grateful for right now?

  2. What is one problem or challenge I'm facing, and what can I do today to make it better?

  3. What is one positive action I can take today that will move my life in the direction I want it to go?

Then do something important: ACT ON YOUR ANSWERS.

Don't just think about what you're grateful for. Appreciate it.

Don't just think about the problem. Take a step toward solving it.

Don't just think about what you want. Do something that moves you closer to it.

And at the end of the day, before you go to sleep, take another five minutes.

Ask yourself what went right today. What did you accomplish? What did you learn? What can you do better tomorrow?

Celebrate the things that went right, no matter how small. Learn from the things that went wrong, but don't spend your evening dwelling on them. Tomorrow is another opportunity to improve.

Do this every day, and you'll begin training yourself to look for opportunities instead of obstacles, solutions instead of excuses, and progress instead of perfection.

Because positive thinking isn't just about feeling better. It's about thinking better, making better decisions, and taking the actions that create a better life.

Change your focus. Change your actions. Change your life.
